Susie and Teddy Fly to the Moon

Susie and Teddy build a rocket from cardboard boxes and fly to the moon, where a strange green glow waits behind a moonstone.

Susie loved the night sky. Every evening she stood by her window with Teddy tucked under her arm and counted the stars one by one.

One night, she leaned close to him and whispered, “Teddy, let’s fly to the moon.”

Teddy stared up at the silver sky. Of course he wanted to go. He was brave in the way only teddy bears can be.

The next day, Susie gathered cardboard boxes, coloured paper, and a roll of sticky tape. Soon their room had a rocket in the middle of it, with a round window and a shiny silver nose. Susie climbed in first. Teddy sat beside her, very straight and very serious.

“Three, two, one... take off!” Susie said.

The rocket shook. The room spun away. Then stars flashed all around them, bright as sugar sprinkles in the dark. Through the little window, Susie watched the moon grow bigger and bigger until it filled the sky.

At last, the rocket gave a soft bump and stopped.

They stepped outside onto the moon. Everything glittered pale and cold, and their footsteps made tiny, puffing marks in the dust. Susie held Teddy’s hand tight.

Then they heard it.

Beep-beep-beep.

From behind a tall moonstone, a green light blinked once... then twice... and something small and glowing began to peek out.
