Alan and Livia follow an old map into the forest and find a hidden stairway leading to a city above the clouds, where something strange and dangerous is already waiting.
Alan ran his thumb across the faded lines of the map he had found in his grandfather’s attic. The paper was brittle with age, the ink broken in places, but the symbol at the edge of the northern forest was still sharp enough to make his pulse quicken. Beside him, Livia leaned over the table, restless as ever, her knee bouncing under the torchlight.
"It has to mean something," Alan said, tracing the mark again.
Livia squinted at it. "Or your grandfather was very committed to being mysterious."
He almost laughed, but the shape of the symbol kept pulling at him. It looked less like a village mark and more like a warning.
"Do you really think there’s anything up there?" she asked, glancing toward the dark window. "Above the clouds?"
Alan folded the map carefully. "There’s one way to find out."
They left before dawn, when the village was still half-asleep and the fields were silver with frost. Their bikes rattled along the forest path, branches clawing overhead, the air growing colder with every turn. By the time the trees thickened around them, the fog had risen so fast it swallowed the trail behind them.
Then the ground changed.
Alan braked hard. The path had vanished, and in its place a narrow hill climbed between two rows of trees. At its crest, rising out of the mist, stood a stairway of white stone. It wound upward into nothing, each step clean and bright as if it had been carved out of moonlight.
Livia stared at it, her mouth slightly open. "That is not normal."
"No," Alan said, heart hammering. "But it’s real."
He stepped onto the first stair.
The climb went on and on, the stone cool beneath his shoes, the fog pressing close until the world beyond the steps disappeared completely. No trees. No sky. Only the narrow staircase, the sound of their breathing, and the strange feeling that something was watching from just beyond the mist.
Then the fog broke.
Alan stopped so suddenly Livia nearly ran into him.
Spread out before them was a city hanging above a vast white sea of clouds. Crystal towers caught the first light of dawn and scattered it in sharp flashes. Silver bridges arched between rooftops. Blue-winged creatures glided silently between spires, their shadows slipping over the streets far below.
Livia grabbed Alan’s sleeve. "Alan..."
He could barely answer. The air itself seemed alive, humming against his skin with a power he had never felt before.
And then every tower in the city flared red.
A low, shuddering sound rolled across the rooftops. Somewhere in the centre of the city, a shape rose into the air above the bridges, dark and shifting, too large to understand and impossible to focus on for more than a second.
The first scream tore through the silence.
Alan turned toward Livia, but she was already staring past him, her face pale. Behind them, at the top of the stairway, another pair of footsteps echoed out of the fog.
