Shadows Beneath the Bridge of Silence

Three friends slip under an abandoned bridge and find their hidden feelings reflected in the dark. As night falls, the shadows stop behaving like shadows and something else arrives.

The river looked almost black in the late afternoon, swollen with the kind of silence that made every sound feel too loud. Kacper, Lena, and Wojtek met at the old Bridge of Silence, the abandoned span everyone in town treated like a dare. People said strange things happened there after dark. Kacper had come because he could not stand being home after the fight with his father. Wojtek kept kicking at the gravel, jaw tight, as if he could outwalk the news of his parents splitting again. Lena looked calm, but her fingers stayed buried in her jacket pocket, clenched hard enough to hurt.

So when Kacper gave a crooked grin and said, "What, are you actually scared?" it sounded more like a challenge to himself than to them.

The bridge loomed above them, rust-stained and strangled with ivy, its metal ribs creaking in the wind. Underneath, the river did not sound like water anymore. It sounded like someone whispering just out of reach, using voices they almost recognised.

Lena stopped at a recess in one of the supports. "Look at this," she said.

The others crowded in behind her. The hollow smelled of wet stone and old iron, but what made Kacper’s skin prickle was the shadows. They were wrong. One trembled in thin, jagged lines like nerves under pressure. Another folded in on itself, then stretched wide again as if it could not hold its shape. A third pulsed dark and hot, sharp with a fury that seemed to stain the wall around it.

Lena lifted her hand.

The nearest shadow leaned toward her and touched her fingertips.

A cold shock ripped through all three of them. Then the alcove filled with voices, each one speaking the thing they had tried hardest to keep quiet. Kacper heard his own anger. Wojtek heard the crack in his family. Lena heard something she had not admitted to anyone, not even herself. The words bounced off the stone and mixed with the river’s whisper until it felt as if the bridge itself was listening.

Then one of the shadows peeled away from the wall.

It slid across the ground toward them.

Heavy footsteps sounded overhead, slow and deliberate, crossing the bridge directly above their heads. The shadows shivered, then lunged at the mouth of the alcove as if they had suddenly sensed the same person the friends had just heard approaching.
