Shadow Walkers

Four friends enter an abandoned castle after sunset to test an old legend, but the ruins are darker than they expected, and something is already waiting below.

By the time the sun slipped behind the forest line, mist had already begun to crawl across the clearing beneath the old castle. Marta, Bartek, Kacper, and Lena sat under a broad oak tree as if they were waiting for the night to make the first move.

Marta was the one who wanted to go in. Kacper had brought his camera and a torch, ready to catch proof of whatever they found. Lena tried to laugh off the tension, but her fingers kept worrying the sleeve of her jacket. Bartek, as usual, looked unimpressed by the legend and annoyed by everyone who believed it.

The villagers had told the story for years: on the darkest nights, a pale light drifted through the ruins, and something moved in the castle walls that should have stayed buried. Most people treated it like a warning meant to keep children away. The four of them were not children anymore, and that made the dare feel less like a game and more like a decision.

The gate gave way with a long, dry groan when Marta pushed it open. Ivy strangled the stonework. Broken windows stared out like hollow eyes. Inside the courtyard, their footsteps sounded too loud, swallowed and thrown back by the walls in dull echoes.

Kacper switched on his torch. The beam skimmed across cracked arches, fallen masonry, and a stairwell half-hidden beneath a sagging sheet of ivy. At its entrance, a corroded plaque hung by one screw. Lena brushed away the rust and read aloud, her voice thinner than she meant it to be:

"If you value your life, turn back."

Bartek let out a short, nervous laugh. "Charming."

No one moved.

Then, from somewhere below the castle, came a sound that erased the last of the joke from his voice. A low murmur. Not quite words. Not quite wind. Followed by the slow, deliberate scrape of something shifting in the dark.

Marta tightened her grip on Lena's hand and looked down into the stairwell.

A pale light had begun to rise from below.
