Shadow Beneath the Old Bridge

Lena, Marcin, and David find a strange new mark on an abandoned bridge and hear something moving below it. When the darkness shifts, the night turns far more dangerous than they expected.

Night dropped over the town fast, taking the last light with it and leaving the June wind to comb through the trees. The others had already gone, their voices fading along the path, and Lena, Marcin, and David were left beneath the old bridge as they were most evenings. It had been closed for years, its warped planks clinging to half-rotted beams above a stream that had narrowed into weeds and mud. It was the kind of place teenagers chose because no adults ever came looking.

That night, though, Lena kept glancing back at the bridge as if it were staring at her. On one of the support beams, she had found a mark she was sure had not been there before: a loop cut inside a triangle, clean and deep, as if someone had carved it with care. Marcin had laughed and said it was probably some stupid prank, but Lena had not laughed back. Something about it felt deliberate.

David lifted his phone to shine a light at the carving, and the screen flickered once before going black.

"Seriously?" he muttered, shaking it. "That battery was full an hour ago."

Lena stepped closer to the ground and frowned. In the mud beside the platform, a line of prints crossed toward the bridge. They were small, but not quite human, and they stopped right at the first plank.

"Look at this," she said.

Marcin bent down beside her. The old boards above them gave a low creak, slow and heavy, like someone had shifted their weight overhead.

No one was up there.

A sharp clatter sounded from under the bridge. All three of them turned at once. Something had moved in the darkness beneath the beams, quick enough that Lena could not make out what it was. Then the bushes on the far bank rustled, and everything went still again.

David swallowed. "Tell me you heard that too."

Before anyone could answer, a shadow slid across the undersides of the planks, larger than any animal Lena knew. It rose into view without a sound, as if the dark itself had thickened and climbed upward. Thin gold lights sparked along the wood, one after another, glowing between the cracks.

A long whistle cut through the forest.

The lights vanished.

The bridge lurched beneath them with a violent удар, hard enough to rattle the railings. Lena grabbed the beam to keep from stumbling, and in the sudden darkness she heard something moving right below their feet.
