Thirteen-year-old Lena sneaks into the abandoned observatory and discovers a strange new power just as something hidden in the dark notices her first.
The observatory had been empty for years, or so Tom said whenever he wanted to scare Lena. Tonight that was exactly why she came.
She climbed the rusted stairs two at a time, her flashlight tucked tight against her side so the beam would not wobble. The metal groaned under her shoes. Above her, the dome loomed against the clouds like a blind eye, and the wind slid through the broken panes with a thin, whistling sigh.
Lena stepped onto the roof and stopped.
The city spread below in a wash of gold and blue, all lit windows and long streets, as if someone had spilled stars across the dark. Up here, the air felt sharper, colder. She drew in a breath and grinned despite herself. This was better than Tom’s ghost stories. Better than sitting at home pretending not to care.
Then something cracked inside the observatory.
Lena froze. The sound had been small, but it was wrong in the silence, too deliberate to be the wind. She moved behind a low wall and pressed herself flat against the rough stone, listening. Another noise followed, softer this time, like a shoe scraping across metal.
Her pulse kicked hard.
She closed her eyes for a second, just to steady herself. When she opened them again, the roof was no longer only roof and shadow. Lines of colour shimmered in the air, thin as threads, bending around the chimney, the broken rail, her own hands. The night had depth she had never noticed before. Even the silence had shape.
And in the far corner, where the darkness gathered thickest, a figure stood perfectly still.
Lena’s breath caught. She had not heard it move. She had not seen it before. Yet she could feel it now, as clearly as if it were leaning over her shoulder.
The thought came without warning: look closer.
She did not move, but something in her shifted. The dark figure sharpened, as if her mind had reached out and touched it. For one stunned heartbeat, she felt it answer.
