Shadow over Silver Lake

Three friends find a coded notebook by the lake and follow it into the woods, where dusk turns strange and something hidden answers from the dark.

June had settled over Silver Lake like a held breath. Pine resin hung in the air, the water caught the last gold of sunset, and the first stars trembled on the surface. Lena, Bartek, and Ignacy sat on the shore with their shoes in the grass, keeping to the same end-of-term ritual they had fallen into years ago. School was over, but none of them felt quite ready to let the evening go.

Bartek broke the silence first. He pulled an old notebook from his backpack, the leather cover cracked and soft with age. He had found it in his grandmother’s attic that afternoon, buried under a box of broken frames and yellowed letters. Across the front, in fading ink, someone had written: Warning: for insiders only.

Lena leaned closer. "That is not a normal notebook."

Bartek opened it carefully. The first page held a precise sketch of the lake shore, but the paths between the trees were marked with symbols none of them recognised. Under the drawing, in a sharper hand, one line had been written: Shadow over Silver. Begins when dusk falls. Look for traces under the old oak tree.

Ignacy let out a short laugh that sounded forced even to him. "Right. Because that sounds completely harmless."

No one answered. The woods behind them had gone from green to black at the edges, and the old oak on the hill seemed to be waiting for them. Lena stood up first, already scanning the tree line, and the others followed before either could admit they were uneasy.

They crossed into the forest with their phone torches cutting thin white tunnels through the dark. The air changed immediately. The lake vanished behind them, the birds went silent, and every step over the roots sounded too loud. When they reached the oak, Bartek crouched and swept aside the tangled roots.

Metal flashed back at him.

He dragged free a small rusted box, no bigger than a lunch tin. Lena reached for the latch, and the moment her fingers touched it, a freezing gust tore through the clearing. The branches above them lashed together with a dry crack, and somewhere deep in the woods, a shriek split the night.

All three froze.

Then a shape burst out between the trees, running straight toward them.
