The Workshop Under the Stairs

Lena discovers a hidden workshop under the stairs, where clocks, mirrors, and ordinary objects behave as if they are waiting for her.

Lena got home faster than usual, her shoes slipping on the wet front path. Rain had been falling all day, turning the yard into a shallow maze of puddles and отражения, and the house smelled of damp stone and tea gone cold.

As she climbed the stairs, she heard it again: a soft creak from beneath the fourth step. She had heard that sound a hundred times before and ignored it just as often. This time, she stopped. Her hand closed around the edge of the runner carpet and pulled it back.

A tiny door stared up at her from the wood, brass-coloured and worn smooth at the corners. Delicate carvings curled across it in leaves and tiny snails, as if someone had hidden a forest in the grain. Lena held her breath, then pressed her fingers to the latch. It gave with a faint click.

Behind the door was a narrow space that should not have existed. Violet light leaked through the dark, carrying a scent like dust, lavender, and something metallic. Lena crouched and stepped inside.

The room opened out far larger than it should have been. Shelves lined the walls, crowded with caskets, old pens, clock faces, and tools she could not name. Two clocks ticked against each other, their hands spinning in opposite directions. A mirror hung beside them, but it did not show her reflection. One moment it held a moonlit clearing. The next, a misty street she had never seen before.

Then one of the clocks struck a sharp, impossible rhythm. A silver-bound postcard slid off the shelf and fluttered to the floor at Lena's feet. On the back, written in fresh black ink, were six words: "Lena, are you ready? Time to start the game."

Before she could move, the door behind her shut with a quiet, final click. On the table, an old porcelain lamp flickered once, then burst into light.
