When the kitchen goes dark, the cupboard wakes up and the talking objects hear a strange knock behind the oldest door.
In the little kitchen, when the last lamp clicked off, the cupboard woke up.
By day it was only wood and shelves. By night it became Cupboard Land, where Basiula the spoon laughed at everything, Gucio the pot rolled with his own jokes, and Celina the sugar bowl always knew the latest gossip from the table.
That night, the moon shone so brightly that the tiles looked silver. Sólka, the tiny salt shaker, was standing near the back when she heard it.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The chatter stopped at once.
"Did you hear that?" whispered Sólka.
Gucio tilted his lid. "Maybe it was the wind," he said, though his voice had gone soft.
Then came the sound again. Not from the kitchen. From behind the oldest cupboard door.
A thin line of light trembled through the crack.
Celina gave a small gasp. "Something is in there."
Basiula leaned forward. "A treasure?" she breathed. "Or someone who needs us?"
The friends crept closer, shelf by shelf, until they were all gathered around the old door. The light flickered once, then twice.
And just as Sólka reached for the handle, someone on the other side knocked back.
