Tosiek and Lena find a dusty wardrobe hidden in the school library. Inside it is a misty doorway to a strange world, and something in the shadows is already moving toward them.
One stormy afternoon, Tosiek and Lena ducked between the tall bookcases of the school library to escape the impatient teacher and the noise that seemed to follow them everywhere. Rain tapped hard against the windows. In the dim quiet, the library felt bigger than usual, as if the shadows had spread out between the shelves.
"Hush," Lena whispered, gripping Tosiek’s sleeve. "Did you hear that?"
A loud clatter sounded from behind the highest bookcase. Tosiek froze, but curiosity tugged harder than fear. The two of them slipped along the narrow aisle until they reached an old wardrobe tucked into the wall. It was covered in dust, with carved handles and splintered edges, and Tosiek was certain he had never seen it there before.
"Did someone leave a coat rack here?" he whispered.
Lena gave a crooked smile. "That looks like something out of a fairy tale."
She pulled open the door.
The wardrobe creaked, and inside hung rows of thick coats and tangled cords. Yet behind them, glowing faintly through the darkness, something silvery drifted and shimmered like breath on a cold window.
"Do you see that?" Lena asked.
Tosiek nodded without speaking. The mist shifted, curling deeper into the wardrobe as if it were waiting for them.
They stepped inside.
At first there was only the smell of old cloth and dust. Then the floor seemed to tilt beneath their shoes, the air turned sharply cold, and a far-off bell rang once, clear and strange. Lena parted the last coat with both hands.
The world beyond made Tosiek’s breath catch. Giant trees rose around them, their leaves broad and bright as umbrellas. Tiny lights floated between the branches like living sparks. Far ahead, bridges hung in the air between tree-top huts, swaying gently over a ground that did not look quite still.
Then the leaves rustled.
A pair of large green eyes appeared in the shadows, and a small blue paw reached out from behind a trunk. Tosiek and Lena stayed perfectly still as something began to move toward them through the trees.
