The Door Beneath the Library

Three students follow a missing bag into the basement of an old university library and find a hidden door that should not be there.

At Mroczek University, tucked between the grey tenements of the old town, even ordinary days felt half-removed from the present. The walls held the cold of older centuries, the corridors bent in on themselves, and the faculty library carried the kind of silence that seemed to listen back.

One wet autumn evening, while most of the students were buried in colloquia notes and caffeine, Anka, Michał, and Lena slipped down to the basement beneath the library. Officially, they were looking for Lena's missing bag. None of them said out loud that the bag had already become an excuse. The real reason was simpler: the basement had been off-limits for years, and that made it impossible to ignore.

The staircase was narrow and slick with moisture. Their phone torches cut thin cones through the dark, catching only fragments at a time: leaning shelves, boxes stamped with faded inventory numbers, and rows of books so old their spines looked cracked by dry weather rather than handling. Every sound came back to them a second later, softened and distorted, as if the building were repeating their footsteps under its breath.

Lena paused at the bottom step. "Wait."

Anka had already noticed it too. Behind a globe standing alone against the wall was a patch of stone that did not match the rest. Michał moved the globe aside, and the outline of a small metal door emerged from the gloom. Someone had marked it with a strange symbol, something between an M and a key, scratched so deep into the surface that it looked deliberate.

"That wasn't there earlier," Lena said.

Michał reached for the handle anyway. The latch gave with a soft, reluctant click, and the door swung inward on a sigh of cold air.

Beyond it was another staircase, narrower and steeper than the first, descending into a darkness none of them had expected. The air changed at once, turning sharper, older. At the bottom, far down the corridor, a weak amber lamp flickered as if it had been left burning for years.

Then came a faint rustle from somewhere deeper inside.

They froze.

A shadow moved across the far wall, tall and slow, and none of them was standing where it came from.
