The Portal Beneath the Old Oak

Janek and Maja find a hidden portal under the Old Oak, and the forest on the other side is stranger than anything they expected.

Janek hated being cooped up indoors, especially on rainy days. He would press his forehead to the window and watch the drops race down the glass, wondering what it would feel like to be somewhere wild and secret instead. Today, though, the sky was clear and bright, and the forest behind the house was finally calling his name.

Maja was already waiting at the door with a grin so wide it seemed to take up her whole face.

"Do you have the map?" she asked.

Janek lifted a folded sheet of paper. "Of course. Do we look like proper explorers or not?"

Maja laughed, and a moment later they were running along the path behind the house, heading into the trees. The forest was thick with green shadows and familiar sounds: a jay’s sharp cry overhead, the snap of a branch somewhere deeper in the woods, the dry whisper of leaves brushing their legs. The adults always warned them not to wander too far, but Janek had a destination in mind.

The Old Oak.

His grandfather had talked about it as if it were more than a tree. Bigger than the rest. Older than anyone could really imagine. A place where stories got tangled in the roots and never quite let go.

Janek checked the map again as they crossed a narrow stream on a line of smooth stones. "We should be close," he said, though he was really talking to himself as much as to Maja.

Maja was already scanning the trees ahead. "I think I see it."

Janek looked up.

There it was, rising out of the forest like a giant sentinel. The trunk was so wide that two children could not have reached around it even if they tried. The bark was split by age into deep, rough ridges, and its branches spread overhead like long arms. Sunlight leaked through the leaves in shifting patches of gold.

But it was the roots that made Janek stop.

Something glimmered between them.

At first he thought it was trapped water, catching the light. Then he stepped closer and saw that the shine moved, smooth and silent, like the surface of a pond stirred by no wind at all. It was tucked into a hollow beneath the tree, half hidden by roots and moss. The air around it felt strangely cool.

Maja crouched beside him. "What is that?"

Janek reached out. The moment his fingers neared the shimmer, a tiny shock ran up his arm, not painful, just sharp enough to make him pull back.

Maja’s eyes widened. "Did you feel that?"

He nodded slowly. The shining shape looked deeper now, as if it opened onto another place entirely. Not a reflection. Not a trick of the light. Something that was waiting.

"It looks like..." Maja began, then swallowed.

Janek stared at the trembling surface. "A portal," he said, almost in a whisper.

For a second neither of them moved. The forest behind them seemed to hold its breath. Then Maja took Janek’s hand, and before either of them could change their minds, they stepped forward together.

The world flipped.

Light burst around them so suddenly that Janek blinked hard, trying to steady himself. The ground under his feet had changed. The air smelled different too, sharp and sweet, like rain on stone and something he couldn’t name. Above them, birds with glowing wings flashed through a sky that seemed too bright to be real. The grass was a deep shade of purple, and somewhere beyond the trees came a sound like laughter, soft and distant and not at all human.

Maja squeezed his hand. "Janek..."

He turned his head, trying to find the forest they had come from, but the path behind them was gone.

In its place stood a figure at the edge of the light.

Tall. Still. Wrapped in leaves and pale feathers that moved as if a breeze were touching them, though the air around Janek did not stir at all. The figure lifted one hand and looked straight at the two of them.

Then, in a quiet voice that made Janek’s skin prickle, it said, "We have been waiting for you. Do you dare to go on?"
