Secret Door Under the Bed

Cuba finds a tiny blue door under his bed and follows Patch into a strange, shining world full of glowing paths and hidden secrets.

Cuba loved his room, especially on rainy afternoons, when the world outside went grey and his blocks could become anything. He was building a tall castle with round towers when Patch, his cat, stopped purring and began to scratch at the floor beside the bed.

Cuba frowned and knelt down. In the shadow under the bed, something glittered. He reached in and pulled back a dusty old shoe, then gasped. There, tucked against the wall, was a tiny blue door with a brass handle. It had not been there before.

"Patch, do you see that?" he whispered.

Patch flicked her tail and pressed her nose to the door. Cuba held his breath, turned the little handle, and opened it with a soft creak. Beyond it was a narrow path that shimmered like a ribbon. Purple mushrooms leaned over a silver river full of glowing pebbles, and small skylights floated above them like sleepy stars.

Cuba stepped through first, with Patch close behind. The door clicked shut at their backs.

A furry creature with purple fur, a pink nose, and ears like floppy leaves peeped out from behind a mushroom and smiled. "I’ve been waiting for you," he said.

Then the path gave a sudden green glow, and from deep in the trees came a low, strange singing.
