Fourteen-year-old Lena finds a hidden door in Old Heights’ oldest library and steps into a buried chamber where an owl-masked figure waits in the dark.
Lena had a habit of disappearing into the library in Old Heights whenever the town felt too small to hold her thoughts. The place was old enough to seem half-forgotten by time, all shadowed aisles, creaking floors, and tall windows that turned cloudy afternoons silver. It always felt as if the books were keeping something to themselves.
That afternoon, she was wandering without a plan, searching for a fantasy novel she had already read twice, when she noticed something wrong behind a shelf marked Lunar Shadows. A strip of worn carpet lay where no carpet should have been, its faded weave caught with a strange silver design, like a crescent moon pressed into the dust.
Lena knelt. The carpet shifted under her fingers.
A narrow iron hatch was hidden beneath it, set into the floor and marked with the outline of an owl. Her pulse jumped. She glanced down the corridor, but the nearest librarian was at the far end, lost in a stack of returns.
The handle was icy when she gripped it. She hesitated only a second before pulling.
The hatch opened with a soft groan, and a breath of cold air slipped up from below, smelling of stone, damp earth, and old paper. A stairwell dropped into darkness. Lena turned on her phone torch and started down, each step echoing too loudly in the narrow shaft.
At the bottom, the staircase opened into a hidden chamber lined with shelves that disappeared into shadow. Books sat there like sleeping things, their spines unmarked and unreadable. In the centre of the room, a blue flame flickered above a circle carved into the stone floor. Words glimmered along its edge, shifting as she looked at them.
Whoever crosses this threshold will awaken the old powers.
Lena took one step closer, and the light flared hard enough to make her blink. When she opened her eyes, someone was standing inside the circle.
Tall. Cloaked in black. Face hidden behind an owl mask.
It lifted one gloved hand toward her.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Lena,” the figure said, and the books on every shelf began to tremble.
