Michal, Lena, and Igor return to school after hours to recover forgotten notebooks and uncover a sealed room beneath the biology classroom, where something waits in the dark.
The first September storm was gathering as Michal, Lena, and Igor hurried back through the empty school to collect the notebooks they had left behind in the biology room. In the evening, the building felt different: the corridors stretched longer, the lights hummed more softly, and every shadow seemed to have time to settle into place. Outside the windows, the sky was fading to a deep, bruised blue.
"Have you ever seen the school after hours?" Igor whispered as they stopped outside room 211. "People say it comes alive when no one’s watching."
Michal gave a short laugh, but Lena didn’t. She was staring at the corridor, her brow faintly furrowed.
"My sister said there used to be an old wartime shelter under this wing," she said quietly. "But nobody knows where the entrance is."
She slid the key into the lock. Before the door even opened, all three of them heard it: a low, strange thud from somewhere under their feet, like a fist knocking once from deep below the floor.
They froze.
Igor looked down at the worn tiles. Near the wall, half hidden by scuffs and years of cleaning, was a faint circle scratched into the floor. He crouched and brushed away a line of dust with his shoe.
The tile shifted.
Then, with a sharp squeal, a section of the floor gave way, revealing a dark hatch no one had seen before.
"Okay," Michal said, his voice suddenly tight. "That is definitely not normal."
A cold draft rose from the opening, carrying the smell of damp stone and old dust. Lena lifted her phone and shone the light inside. A narrow stairway descended into blackness.
"It’s a passage," she whispered.
Igor was already leaning forward, trying to see more. The beam of Lena’s phone caught the edge of something below: a row of benches, a cracked blackboard, and walls stained by time. It looked like a classroom, buried underground.
Then a sound moved through the dark at the far end of the room.
Something below them had just shifted.
