In a bleak forest after dark, Fenrir and Astris meet a stranger with scarlet eyes and a secret that could change everything.
Night settled over the ancient forest like a weight, but darkness here was never empty. It stirred with breath, rustle, and watchful eyes, with the quiet movement of things that only came alive after sunset. In a clearing tangled with fern and root, a broken tree trunk lay split open like an old wound. Across it stretched a snake the color of ash and smoke, sleek and still, its silver fangs catching the faint light. Fenrir looked as dangerous as he was beautiful.
Above him, on a low branch, an owl named Astris kept her balance with unnerving stillness. Her dark feathers drank in the night, and her amber eyes missed nothing. She did not look at the forest so much as through it, as if every secret hidden in the bark and shadow had already been measured and named. Fenrir trusted few creatures. Astris trusted even fewer. Yet the forest had a way of forcing unlikely allies into the same patch of moonlight.
Then the air changed. A damp gust moved through the clearing, carrying the smell of wet earth and something older, deeper, as if the ground itself had shifted in its sleep. Fenrir froze. Astris opened her wings half a span, silent as a thought. From the ferns, a shape emerged, too tall for a lynx, too lean for a deer, too deliberate to be an accident of shadow.
It stopped at the edge of the clearing. Two scarlet eyes lifted out of the dark and found them at once. Not blinking. Not wavering. Fenrir felt the tension coil through his body, sharp as a strike, while Astris lowered her head a fraction, reading the stranger as she would read a storm front. The creature’s voice came soft and rough, almost swallowed by the trees.
"I know what you are looking for... But do you dare to come closer?"
Fenrir and Astris exchanged a single, charged glance. Whatever had just stepped out of the ferns was not a lost wanderer, and this was no ordinary meeting. The forest went silent around them, waiting.
