Riddle Beneath the Old Oak

Tosia and Franek find silver-glowing footprints beneath the old oak in the park, and the trail leads them into the bushes where something strange is waiting.

Tosia and Franek loved the park near their house, especially the old oak tree in the middle of the clearing. Its branches spread wide like giant arms, and on sunny afternoons it made a deep, cool patch of shade.

One day, while they were circling the trunk and laughing, Tosia stopped so suddenly that Franek nearly bumped into her.

"Franek, come here quickly!"

On the grass beneath the oak were tiny footprints. They were small like a child's, but they shimmered silver in the sunlight, as if someone had pressed moonlight into the ground. The trail led straight toward a thick wall of bushes the children had never dared to cross.

Franek bent low and whispered, "Do you think someone is hiding there?"

The footprints glowed brighter. One by one, they disappeared into the leaves, where the branches twitched as if something had just moved inside.

Tosia and Franek stood very still. Then, from deep in the bushes, something flashed between the stems, and Tosia slowly reached out her hand to part the leaves...
