Riddle in the Old Wardrobe

Ola and Franek discover a strange wardrobe in their grandmother's attic. A cold door, a hidden rustle, and a mysterious key make the old house feel suddenly alive.

Ola and her little brother Franek were spending the holidays at their grandmother’s house in the countryside. The house was full of creaks, shadows, and secret corners, and on a rainy afternoon the attic seemed the most exciting place of all.

They climbed the narrow stairs slowly, their footsteps soft on the wood. Boxes were piled near the wall, old books leaned against one another, and in the middle of it all stood a huge wardrobe with carved doors and a brass handle that had gone dull with age.

Ola stopped first. Her eyes shone. "Let’s look inside," she whispered.

Franek swallowed. He was afraid, but he did not want to be left behind. Together they stepped closer. The wardrobe felt cold, even through Ola’s fingers, when she touched the handle.

The door gave a long, sleepy groan as they opened it.

Inside was only darkness at first. Then they heard it: a tiny rustling sound, soft as paper being shaken in the wind.

Franek grabbed Ola’s sleeve. "Did you hear that?"

Before Ola could answer, a pale glow flickered from deep inside the wardrobe. A shelf slid forward by itself with a sharp little click.

On it lay a small shiny key.

Beside the key was a folded note. Ola unfolded it carefully and read the words aloud: "Whoever finds this key will discover the secret of our house..."

A whisper floated out of the dark behind the shelf.

"Come in, if you dare..."
