Philip and his friends notice something impossible in their classroom, and before the first lesson is over, Room 204 seems to be hiding a secret of its own.
Philip had always thought Primary School 9 was the most ordinary place in the world. That was part of why he liked it. The playground at recess, Sonia’s endless questions, Michael’s jokes that made everyone groan and laugh anyway - those were the best parts of the day.
That morning, though, something felt off the moment he stepped into Room 204 with his friends.
Across the blackboard, in large chalk letters that seemed to shimmer faintly in the light, someone had written: "Get ready for something unusual!"
Sonia stopped dead. "Who wrote that? It’s not Ms Kasia’s handwriting."
Michael dropped his bag onto a chair and frowned at the board. "Maybe an eighth-grader. Or the caretaker. Or someone trying very hard to be dramatic."
Philip walked closer. The chalk looked strange up close - almost too bright, as if the colours were still warm. He reached out and brushed one letter with his fingertip.
A soft scrape echoed through the room.
Philip spun around. No one was there. Yet it had sounded as if a chair had been dragged across the floor behind him.
Then the books on Ms Kasia’s desk began to tremble.
One slid open by itself, and a small blue card fluttered out and landed at Sonia’s feet. She picked it up first. On one side was a sketch of the school clock. On the other, in neat black writing, were the words: "Time passes differently when you look carefully."
Philip looked up at the clock above the door.
The hands were moving faster than they should have been. Faster and faster, until they jerked and stopped at exactly 10:10.
Michael stared. "Oi. That’s not normal."
Before Philip could answer, the classroom door clicked shut on its own. The lights above them dimmed, and the chalk writing on the board began to glow.
New words appeared, one after another, as if something invisible was writing them in front of their eyes: "Find the key before time runs out."
From the row of lockers by the window came a sharp metallic rattle.
Philip, Sonia, and Michael turned together.
One of the lockers was moving.
