Portals in the Old Library

Three friends uncover a hidden door in the forgotten corner of the city library and step into a strange world that seems to have been waiting for them.

The Old Town Library always felt a little different after school. Dust drifted in the slanted light, the old shelves leaned in close, and the air smelled of paper, polish, and secrets. Most adults hurried past the back rooms without a glance. Only Mrs. Zosia, the librarian, ever seemed to notice that the building had corners it did not quite want to share.

Maja, Patryk, and Lena loved those corners.

Every Friday, as soon as lessons ended, they slipped between the tallest bookcases and wandered the narrow aisles no one else used. They liked the silence there, the soft creak of the floorboards, and the feeling that something hidden might be waiting just beyond the next shelf.

That afternoon, Lena stopped so suddenly that Patryk nearly bumped into her.

"Look," she whispered.

A pale flicker shimmered behind the encyclopaedia shelf, as if someone had lit a candle in the dark and was shielding the flame with a hand.

The three of them pushed aside a stack of heavy books and found a narrow gap in the wall. There was no storage room beyond it, no broken pipes, no dusty crates. Instead, there was a wooden door, old as the library itself, with a spiral carved into the centre and a brass key already hanging in the lock.

Patryk swallowed. "We should probably tell Mrs. Zosia."

But Lena had already reached for the key.

It turned with a soft click.

The door swung open.

Beyond it was not a room, but a glowing tunnel, bright with drifting sparks of blue and gold. Strange sounds floated out too: distant bells, a burst of laughter, and something like wings brushing through leaves.

Maja tightened her grip on both friends' hands. "Do you hear that?"

Before anyone could answer, the tunnel pulsed. The floor tipped, the air quivered, and all three of them were pulled forward as if the library had taken a deep breath and decided to let them go.

A heartbeat later, they were standing in a clearing lit by a green, shining sky. Trees rose all around them, their leaves glass-bright and trembling in a wind they could not feel. In the middle of the clearing stood a towering gate covered in glowing symbols.

And around the gate moved creatures with delicate wings and long, thin feelers, watching the children as if they had been expected.

Then one of them lifted into the air, came close enough for Maja to see its silver eyes, and whispered, "You finally came. The portal is waking up, and you have very little time."
