Leon notices something impossible after Milena disappears from school: clues, a hidden trail, and a power he can no longer ignore.
The last bus always made Leon feel as if he were riding through the edge of the world. The windows reflected only streaks of sodium light and his own tired face, and when he got off at the final stop, the street beyond the shelter was already sinking into fog. The narrow path to his estate cut between dead hedges and a row of shuttered garages. He knew every broken paving stone by now. That night, though, the darkness felt crowded.
He kept glancing over his shoulder. Nothing. Just mist, a leaning lamppost, the slick shine of wet pavement. Still, the sensation stayed with him, close and patient, like someone walking one step behind him without ever making a sound. Leon lengthened his stride until the estate lights finally came into view, uneasy for reasons he could not explain.
By morning, the school was buzzing with the kind of panic that spreads faster than gossip. Milena was gone. Not late, not skipping class, gone. Her friends were crying in the bathroom. People whispered about a string of messages sent from her phone at three in the morning, messages no one could prove she had written. The headmaster called an emergency assembly. Leon hardly listened. Something in him was already tightening, as if the disappearance had pulled a thread he hadn’t known was there.
For months, strange things had been happening to him in flashes he never understood. A burst of heat under his skin. A spark behind his eyes. The feeling that the air itself was about to split open if he got angry enough or scared enough. He had spent long nights convincing himself it was stress, nothing more.
After lessons, when the corridors had emptied and the cleaners’ carts rattled faintly somewhere downstairs, Leon slipped into the biology room. It was where Milena had last been seen. The benches were still out of place, a clipboard lay half under the teacher’s desk, and the whole room smelled of disinfectant and dust. Leon sat down, shut his eyes, and reached for that dangerous flicker inside him.
It answered.
Heat rolled through his chest. The room tilted, then flooded with a strange orange light. Sounds sharpened until he could hear voices from two floors away. He smelled chalk, old varnish, wet wool on someone’s coat in the corridor. Dust glittered in the air like ash caught in flame. Leon opened his eyes and froze.
Across the teacher’s desk, faint glowing footprints crossed the floorboards and stopped at the back wall. They led straight to a narrow seam hidden beneath the desk lamp, a panel almost invisible in the wood. Leon stood so fast the chair scraped behind him. His pulse hammered as he crouched and reached for the latch.
Something moved below.
A soft knock came from inside the darkness, and then a voice, low and urgent, rose through the floorboards: "Leon, I knew you'd come..."
