Weronika, Kuba, and Basia find a hidden portal beneath their old school, and one closing door leaves them with only seconds to decide what to do.
The school in the city centre looked tired even on a bright day. Plaster peeled from the walls in ragged strips, and the swings in the courtyard had been rusty for so long that no one remembered them working properly. Most students ignored the building. Weronika, Kuba, and Basia had always felt there was something waiting in its shadows.
They were supposed to catch the bus after history, but instead they slipped away from the crowd and headed for the basement stairs. The caretaker had said, almost offhand, that old service tunnels once ran beneath the gym. He had laughed when he mentioned them, but Weronika had seen the warning in his eyes.
The corridor below was colder than the rest of the school, the air damp with the smell of dust and wet brick. Their phone lights cut thin white paths through the dark, catching on cobwebs, cracked tiles, and pipes that clanged softly overhead. Then Basia stopped so suddenly that Kuba almost walked into her.
Ahead of them, behind a half-open door near the old cloakroom, a narrow stairway dropped into blackness. At the bottom, something shimmered.
Weronika went first. What waited at the end of the passage was not a wall, not a window, but a trembling sheet of light stretched between the bricks, blue and silver at once, as if the dark itself had been peeled back. It rippled when she leaned closer.
Kuba swallowed and raised a hand. His fingers touched the glowing surface, and the hand vanished up to the wrist.
Basia’s breath caught. "What is that?"
Before anyone could answer, metal scraped behind them. The door they had come through began to swing shut, slow and deliberate, as if something on the other side had just decided they were not leaving. Weronika turned back, then looked again at the pulsing light ahead. From somewhere beyond it came a soft flash, like a signal.
Something was waiting for them to step through.
