Passage Beneath the Old Oak

Amelia and her brother Franek uncover a hidden passage beneath the park’s oldest oak tree, and it leads them toward a world of glowing signs, stone gates, and a mysterious hooded figure.

Amelia had always believed old trees kept their secrets deep in the roots. So when Franek came home from the library clutching a torn scrap of map, she knew at once that it mattered. The paper smelled of dust and old glue, and in one corner was the drawing of a giant tree with split roots, like claws gripping the ground. Amelia pointed at it without a word.

"The oak tree in the park," Franek whispered.

By late afternoon they were already on their way, armed with torches, notebooks, and a pocketful of sweets that Franek insisted were "supplies for explorers." The park was almost empty. A warm wind moved through the grass, and the leaves in the paths whispered under their shoes. At the far end, beyond the swings and the bench with the broken slat, the old oak stood waiting, broad and still, its branches spread like an enormous shelter.

Then Amelia saw it. A faint blue light shimmered around the trunk.

Franek reached the tree first. He knelt, pushed aside a curtain of moss, and gave a sharp breath. Hidden beneath it was a wooden flap, fitted so neatly into the roots that Amelia might have walked past it a hundred times without noticing. In the centre was the same tree symbol from the map, carved so deeply it looked almost alive.

Her fingers shook as she grabbed the metal handle. Together they pulled.

The flap swung open with a low creak, and cold air rose from the dark below. A staircase disappeared into the ground, lit by a flickering blue glow that painted the roots silver. Strange marks flashed under their feet as they stepped down, one by one, as if the stairs were waking up.

At the bottom, two stone gates waited. They were taller than Amelia and covered in patterns that pulsed softly, like a heartbeat. The air smelled damp and sweet, like wet earth and honey. Beyond the gates came the sound of water dripping somewhere in the dark, and a thin, chiming ring, as if crystal bells were being tapped far away.

Franek swallowed. "Should we go in?"

The echo bounced back from the tunnel before Amelia could answer.

Then a burst of silver sparks flew out from behind the gates, and a hooded figure stepped into the blue light. It stood perfectly still, its eyes glowing from under the shadow of its hood, as if it had been waiting for them all along.
