Olek's Enchanted Hat

Olek finds a strange purple hat in his grandmother's garden, and the garden begins to whisper secrets. A hidden door may be waiting somewhere among the flowers.

Olek always loved visiting his grandmother, especially on bright days when her garden glowed with flowers and hummed with bees. That afternoon he was playing hide and seek with Puffy the cat when something strange caught his eye beneath the old lilac bush. Half hidden in the leaves lay a big purple hat, covered in yellow stars.

Olek crouched down and picked it up. It felt soft and warm, almost like it had been waiting for him. Before he could ask his grandmother about it, he set the hat on his head.

At once, the garden changed. Butterflies twirled over the grass in a glittering cloud, and the blades of grass rustled as if they were whispering, “Follow us.” Puffy stared with round, shiny eyes and let out a curious meow that sounded almost like a song. Then something slid out of Olek’s trouser pocket and fluttered to the ground. It was a small piece of paper with bright coloured letters.

If you want to know the secret of the hat, find the door hidden in the garden!

Olek looked up so fast that the hat nearly slipped over his eyes. A hidden door? He turned in a slow circle, searching behind the roses, the stone bench, and the dripping watering can. Puffy’s ears pricked up. Together they edged toward the big old tree at the far end of the garden, where the roots curled over the earth like knobbly fingers, and something small and dark seemed to be waiting at the trunk.
