Ola the Squirrel hears a strange sound in the Old Forest and gathers her friends to find out what is making it. But the noise keeps coming closer.
Deep in the Old Forest, where sunlight slipped between the leaves and turned the moss gold, lived a bright little squirrel named Ola. She could not stay still for long. If there was a new trail, a hidden berry, or the top branch of the tallest tree, Ola wanted to be there first.
One morning, while she was nibbling her favourite nut, Ola heard it: bam-bam-bam! She stopped with one paw in the air. The sound came again, loud and heavy, but when she peered through the branches, the forest looked empty.
Ola scampered down to find her friends. Susie the Owl was just coming home from her night walk, blinking her big round eyes. "Did you hear that too?" Ola asked. Susie tilted her head. "Maybe it is the wind," she said. But then bam-bam-bam shook the clearing again, and this time even Susie fluffed up her feathers.
Soon Felka the Frog hopped over, full of ideas, and then came Zuzia, Basia the Badger with her little brother, Kazio the Hedgehog, and a whole family of mice. They gathered under the big oak tree and listened. No one could guess what was making that strange, thumping sound. Some tapped twigs against the ground. Some held their breath. Then, right behind the thick bush, the forest boomed once more - bam-bam-bam - and every animal froze.
