Whispers in the Old Library

Julka, Kuba and Basia break into the Old Town Library at midnight and find a secret that seems to be waiting for them between the shelves.

The Old Town Library had been dark for years after closing time, its long corridors left to dust, silence, and whatever memories the building refused to forget. Julka, Kuba, and Basia loved places like that. They loved locked doors, half-buried secrets, and the feeling that the world had been waiting for someone bold enough to ask the right question.

They slipped through the garden under a weak wash of moonlight, climbing over a rusted gate with careful hands and racing hearts. Kuba produced the key he had found in his grandfather's drawer. It turned in the lock as if it had been expecting him.

When the door opened, cold air drifted out to meet them. Julka lifted her torch, and the beam skated over rows of dusty shelves, crooked ladders, and old portraits of stern-faced authors watching from the walls. At midnight, the library seemed to tighten around them. Somewhere deeper inside, a whisper brushed past the bookshelves, soft and close, like pages turning in a room where no one stood.

"Did you hear that?" Basia asked, her fingers digging into Julka's sleeve.

"Probably the wind," Kuba said, though the joke fell flat the moment it left his mouth.

Julka moved toward the oldest section of the library, where the books were packed so tightly they looked fused into the shelves. Between Secrets of the Night and Diary of Lost Hours, something pale caught the edge of her light. She pulled free a letter, folded and pressed yellow with age. The paper felt warmer than it should have.

She looked up at her friends just as a loud crash shattered the silence behind them. The torchbeam jerked wildly across the walls. A shadow cut through the corridor and vanished. Then came the whisper again, clearer this time, rising from the dark above the stairwell. It sounded almost like a voice reading from a book.

Kuba took one step toward the half-open door at the end of the hall, and Julka tightened her grip on the letter.

From somewhere inside the attic, a second whisper answered, speaking her name.
