Lena and the centaur Tolek spot strange lights deep in the Forest of Whispers and follow them into a night that feels less like wonder and more like a summons.
Lena had learned long ago that the Forest of Whispers never stayed still for long. By daylight it could almost pass for an ordinary wood, with its roots knuckled over the ground and its branches stitched together in green shadow. But after dusk, when moonlight caught in the cobwebs and the leaves began their soft, secret murmur, the forest felt awake in a way that made the skin prickle.
Tonight, Lena sat on the carved limb of an old oak, her fingers wrapped around a juniper-braided walking stick, and watched the dark canopy shift above her. Below, half-hidden in the mist, stood Tolek. His red mane shone faintly whenever the moon broke through the leaves, and despite the tension in his posture, there was still something infuriatingly bright about his grin.
"Lena," he whispered, his voice suddenly tight. He pointed deeper into the trees.
At first she saw nothing but mist and shadow. Then the lights appeared.
They drifted up through the moss in clusters, pale and deliberate, not darting like fireflies and not floating like lanterns. They held their shape as they moved, circling one another in slow, precise patterns, as if following a ritual Lena had never been taught to recognize. The air changed around them. Wet bark, crushed fern, and a sharp trace of lavender rolled through the clearing, and the trees answered with a low hum that seemed to come from the trunks themselves.
Lena slid down from the oak and took a careful step forward. "I have never seen anything like that here."
Tolek caught her sleeve before she could go farther. "Then that is exactly why we should leave. Now."
His warning came too late. The ground gave a subtle shiver under their feet. The lights stopped circling and turned toward them at once, as if they had been noticed. A voice followed, soft as breath against glass and clear enough to raise the hairs on Lena's arms.
Who dares to disturb the night dance of the Guardians?
The lights closed in, one ring tightening around them while blue sparks rose overhead like tiny, waking stars. Lena tightened her grip on the walking stick and looked up into the dark between the branches, where something far larger than the lights seemed to be waiting to answer them.
