Mila, a curious young fox, slips into the Green Forest after dark and finds something glowing in the Old Glade. The deeper she looks, the stranger the night becomes.
Mila was a young red fox who lived with her family in the hollow of an old oak tree, deep in the Green Forest. The woods stretched farther than she could imagine, with trunks like pillars and branches so thick they swallowed the sky. At night, owl calls floated through the leaves, and the moon hung above the trees like a coin of silver glass.
Most young foxes curled up beside their mothers and fathers when darkness came. Mila never could. Her nose was always twitching, her ears always turning toward the next sound, the next shadow, the next secret. That evening, as blue twilight settled over the forest floor, she made up her mind.
"I’m staying awake tonight," she whispered. "I want to see what the forest does after dark."
She slipped from the hollow without waking anyone and padded past ferns slick with dew, under looping vines and low branches heavy with berries. The forest felt different at night. Every crackle seemed louder. Every breeze seemed to carry a message.
Before long, Mila reached a place she had never visited before: the Old Glade. The forest elders avoided it, and now she understood why. Moss-covered stones rose from the ground in a crooked circle, and the air there seemed to hum, low and steady, as if something hidden beneath the earth were breathing.
Mila lowered herself into the grass and listened. The sound pulsed through the clearing like a distant heartbeat. Then, between the ferns, she saw movement.
A pair of bright eyes was watching her.
Mila held her breath. The shape stepped forward, slow and silent. It looked like an animal, but its fur shimmered like stars caught in shadow. Moonlight slid across its shoulders, and the mossy stones around it seemed to glow a little brighter.
The strange creature stopped just beyond the edge of the clearing and turned its head toward the dark trees.
Then the ground gave a deep, sudden shiver.
Mila’s ears flattened. The glowing figure looked straight at her, as if it had been waiting for her all along. One more step, and she might learn what it was. One step back, and she might never know.
She stood there between the light and the dark, her heart thudding as the Old Glade went utterly still.
