Leon and Zosia find a hidden door in an old library. Inside, Room 7 seems to breathe with magic, and a whisper warns them that only imagination will reveal its secret.
Leon loved libraries. He loved the hush between the shelves, the dusty smell of old pages, and the feeling that every book was keeping a secret just for him. This summer, he had a partner in adventure too: his cousin Zosia, who had come to stay for the holidays. Together, they spent whole afternoons in the old city library, hunting for odd stories and sketching maps of invented kingdoms in the margins of their notebooks.
On Tuesday, the reading room glowed gold and red through its stained-glass windows. Leon was following the line of the corridor at the back of the library when he stopped so suddenly that Zosia nearly bumped into him.
At the far end of the hall stood a narrow door painted deep blue, so dark it almost looked black. A brass number 7 gleamed in the middle of it.
Leon frowned. He had drawn every hallway in the library on his maps. This door was not one of them.
"Zosia," he whispered, "look at that."
She hurried over, eyes wide. "Was it there yesterday?"
Leon shook his head. "I would have noticed."
They stood very still for a moment, listening. The library behind them sighed with soft page-turns and distant footsteps, but the corridor ahead seemed to hold its breath.
"Do you think we're allowed to open it?" Zosia asked.
Leon reached for the handle anyway. "Only one way to find out."
The door moved with a quiet creak, as if it had been waiting for them. Beyond it was a round room no larger than a classroom, but it felt much stranger than that. Globe-like lamps glowed in shifting colours along the ceiling. A shelf in the corner held a chest full of feathers in every shade of blue and silver. On the walls, pictures were not still at all: trees swayed in an invisible wind, and clouds drifted over painted mountains that seemed to deepen the longer Leon stared at them.
Zosia let out a breath. "Leon..."
Then came a soft ticking sound, slow and careful, like a giant clock waking up somewhere inside the walls.
At the centre of the room, on a low pedestal, lay a book wrapped in blue velvet. Its title changed every time Leon blinked.
He took one step closer.
"Should we open it?" Zosia whispered.
Leon lifted his hand toward the cover, and that was when a voice, quiet as paper sliding against paper, drifted through the room.
"Only those who believe in imagination will learn what Room Number 7 is hiding."
The lamps flickered.
The ticking stopped.
And the book began to open on its own.
