Three friends venture deeper into the Emerald Forest and uncover a hidden map, a glowing stone, and a door to an unknown world.
Julia, Bartek, and Lena had run out of games by lunchtime. Tag felt dull, riddles felt old, and even their secret clubhouse seemed too small for the hot, restless afternoon. So, with nothing better to do, they slipped past the last row of brambles and into the deepest part of the Emerald Forest.
The air changed there. It was cooler, shadowed by tall trees that leaned close overhead, their leaves whispering like someone speaking just out of earshot. Ferns brushed against their ankles. Lena crouched to inspect a ring of bright mushrooms. Bartek stopped to listen when a thrush burst into song. Julia looked between the trunks, certain that something might be watching them back.
Then Lena’s foot hit something hard beneath the moss.
She stumbled, and all three of them dropped to their knees. Half-buried in the soil was an old wooden box, its corners blackened with age and its lid crusted with green moss. Julia scraped away the dirt with both hands while Bartek pried at the edge. With a dry creak, the box opened.
Inside lay a folded map covered in strange symbols and slanted writing. Julia read the words aloud, slowly: "Follow the light and you will find the passage to the Other World."
Bartek was still staring at the map when a shaft of light shot through the trees, bright as a blade. It landed on a stone a few steps away. The stone began to glow, softly at first, then brighter, pulsing green beneath a skin of lichen.
Lena took one step forward. Then another.
Julia and Bartek followed her without speaking. When the three of them placed their hands on the stone, the ground gave a sudden shiver. A cold mist rolled up around their knees, smelling sharply of mint and sage. Shapes moved inside it. First a fox, then a deer, then more animals, but these were no ordinary forest creatures. Their eyes shone blue. Their fur glittered like scattered stars.
A whisper drifted through the trees, low and clear, and each child heard their own name.
The map flared so brightly that Julia gasped. The trees in front of them slowly parted, opening into a narrow tunnel of silver light. Bartek tightened his grip on Lena’s hand. Julia could feel her heart thudding as they stared into the passage.
And then, just outside the glowing tunnel, a figure stepped from the shadows wearing a cloak made of iridescent leaves.
The forest went still.
"Only those who solve the riddle of the Guardian may go on," the figure said. "Are you ready?"
