Three friends find an old bottle on the beach, and inside it is a map that seems to point to a secret island no one has ever reached.
The afternoon wind tugged at Martha's hair as she walked along the shore, her bare feet sinking into the cool, shifting sand. Beside her, Bartek and his younger sister, Zosia, were hunting for shells in the shallows, each hoping to find something better than the usual cracked fragments and smooth pebbles.
Then Bartek froze.
"Look!" he shouted, lifting a bottle from the sand.
It was old and cloudy, with salt clinging to the glass. Inside, tightly rolled and yellowed with age, was a piece of paper.
Zosia had it out before Bartek could even stop her. She spread the sheet flat on her knee and stared. It was a map, but not one of any place they knew. An island was drawn in the middle, ringed with jagged rocks, stars, arrows, and a single huge question mark. Along the bottom, in crooked handwriting, someone had written: Courage leads where no one dares to go.
Martha leaned closer. Her heart beat faster as she traced the lines with one finger. "What if this is real?"
Bartek grinned, though his eyes had gone wide. "Then we’ve just found the beginning of an adventure."
The next morning, they followed the route on the map with backpacks full of sandwiches, torches, and binoculars. The path led them away from the beach and into a dark forest where the trees pressed close together and the air smelled of damp earth and pine needles. Every snap of a twig made Zosia jump.
Near the muddy track, she crouched and pointed. "Tracks."
Bartek knelt beside her. They weren’t bird prints or rabbit prints. They were too deep for that, and they led straight toward a narrow clearing ahead.
At the centre of the clearing stood an old oak with twisted roots, and underneath them lay a ring of stones, just as the map had promised. Resting in the middle was a single shell, pale and gleaming, exactly like the one inside the bottle.
Bartek swallowed. "I think this is a clue."
Martha took one step closer.
Then, from somewhere beneath the stones, came a low rumble. The ground shivered under their feet, and the shell began to spin.
