Mystery in the Drawer

Little Zosia finds that the objects in her bottom drawer can talk. Then, one quiet evening, the drawer starts rustling again and something even stranger begins to happen.

Zosia loved her dresser. Its drawers were painted bright colours, and the lowest one was the most curious of all. It was packed with crayons, erasers, and old stickers that had lost their shine.

One evening, just as her mother kissed her good night, Zosia heard a tiny whisper.

"Psst!"

Zosia sat up straight. The whisper came from the dresser.

She slipped out of bed and padded across the room. Very carefully, she pulled open the bottom drawer.

On top of the crayons lay her favourite red one. It blinked at her and gave a small stretch.

"At last," said the crayon. "Someone heard me."

Zosia froze. "You... you can talk?"

"Of course," said the crayon. "And I am not the only one. This drawer is full of voices."

Before Zosia could ask another question, the eraser sprang upright with a little squeak.

"Hush!" it said. "Do you hear that? Someone's coming."

Zosia held her breath. A soft tapping sounded from the far end of the drawer. Then something flashed in the dark corner, bright as a tiny spark, and the whole drawer began to tremble.
