Mrs Basia's Magic Cupboard

In Mrs Basia's kitchen, Hania and Jaś hear strange voices from an old blue cupboard where the spoons, pots, and cups seem to have secrets of their own.

Mrs Basia's kitchen always smelled of butter, warm bread, and sweet cake. Against the wall stood a big blue cupboard, old and a little crooked, with paint worn smooth by years of hands opening and closing it.

Hania and Jaś loved helping their grandmother there. They fetched bowls, wiped the table, and peeked at the shiny spoons. That morning, sunlight lay in bright squares across the floor, and the kitchen was very still.

Then Hania heard it.

"Psst... is anyone there?"

She froze. Jaś stopped with a cloth in his hand.

From inside the cupboard came a tiny clink.

"Be quiet!" hissed a grumpy voice. "They'll hear us!"

Hania looked at Jaś. Jaś looked at Hania.

"Did you hear that too?" he whispered.

Before Hania could answer, the cupboard door gave a little shiver. A silver spoon pressed itself against the crack and slid sideways, as if it was trying to peek out.

"Help," it said in a frightened voice. "The kitchen clock has gone missing. And something is moving behind the bottom drawer."

Hania's heart thumped. Jaś took one tiny step back.

The cupboard door creaked wider on its own, and the lowest drawer gave a slow, angry rattle...
