Echoes in Wolf Forest

Young fox Rudo hears a strange night echo in Wolf Forest and follows it with his friends toward a clearing no one wants to name.

Wolf Forest was usually alive with whispers: leaves brushing together, twigs cracking under cautious paws, and the soft murmur of animals settling into their nests. But that spring, the nights felt different.

Rudo, a young fox with a messy reddish-brown ponytail, lay awake in his burrow beneath a quilt of roots and moss. The moon was bright enough to silver the entrance. He listened to the familiar sounds of the forest, half-dozing, when a deep echo rolled between the trees.

Rudo sat up so quickly his ears twitched. The sound came again, low and hollow, as if the forest itself were speaking back. It seemed almost like a voice calling a name, but the words vanished before he could catch them.

By morning, he was bursting to tell someone. Hedgehog Spike poked his nose out of a bramble patch while Spotted Owl blinked calmly from a branch overhead, and Rudo blurted out everything at once. By the end of his story, all three were staring at one another with the same prickling curiosity.

They packed a few nuts, some berries, and a smooth leaf for notes, then set off along the narrow path that wound deeper into the woods. The light dimmed under the thick branches, and every shadow seemed to lean closer as they walked.

Near a bend in the trail, they met an old badger with muddy paws and a stern look. When he heard where they were headed, he rumbled, “Stay away from the clearing behind the Crooked Pine.”

That only made Spike’s whiskers tremble with excitement. Spotted Owl rose into the air to scout ahead, and Rudo crept on through the ferns, each step quieter than the last. The echoes grew clearer now, bouncing strangely between the trunks.

Then, from beyond the dense bushes, the sound came again. Not an echo this time. A voice.

Rudo froze. Spike’s paw slipped on a root. Above them, Spotted Owl folded her wings and peered down into the clearing.

Something moved in the shadows at the edge of the trees, and a figure stepped into the moonlight.
