Lost Cipher in the City of Cats

Thirteen-year-old Kacper and Lena follow a strange key into a hidden city of talking cats, where an ancient cipher may decide the fate of their town.

Summer twilight had already softened the old cobbled streets into shades of blue when Kacper cut through the narrow passage behind the brewery, breathless and bent low over the key in his hand. It was small, cold, and far too bright for something so old, as if it had trapped a piece of lightning inside its teeth.

Lena was waiting by the brewery wall, arms folded and foot tapping against the stone. The moment she saw the key, her expression changed. Not relief. Not surprise. Something sharper.

Then a meow came from above them.

Kacper and Lena looked up at the same time.

Five cats sat along the wall, motionless as carved figures. There was a black one with a white patch on its muzzle, a ginger cat with a torn ear, and a broad grey tom at the centre, staring at them with narrow, unblinking eyes.

The grey cat spoke first.

“Are you ready?” it asked, its voice low and clear in the fading light. “The cipher has waited long enough. If you fail to solve it, our city will vanish, and with it everything we have kept hidden for generations.”

Kacper’s grip tightened around the key. Lena took one step closer to him, but neither of them looked away from the cats.

A pale mark had begun to spread across Kacper’s ankle, glowing faintly through the skin like a map drawn in moonlight. Lena stared at it, then reached out and touched the first line of the pattern.

The wall answered.

Stone shifted with a deep, grinding sound, and a seam of darkness opened where there had been nothing a second before. Warm air drifted out, carrying the scent of dust, rain, and something unfamiliar, almost electric. Beyond the crack, rows of tiny lights flickered awake one by one, revealing roofs, alleys, and narrow bridges hidden inside the wall itself.

A city.

Not empty. Not abandoned. Alive.

Kacper barely had time to take in the sight before a sharp cry tore through the night. The cats bristled, backs arching in perfect unison. Lena grabbed Kacper’s sleeve.

And then something huge and dark moved around the corner toward them.
