Lila and the Star Blanket

Lila discovers that her blue star blanket can do something impossible, and when Frost spots it, the quiet in her room turns strange and thrilling.

Lila loved her blue star blanket more than anything. It was soft, warm, and just the right size to tuck under her chin at bedtime.

One evening, after she had put on her pyjamas, she found it lying on the floor beside her bed. Lila frowned. That was odd. Then she saw something even stranger: one tiny star on the blanket was glowing like a candle in the dark.

Lila knelt down and touched the shining star with one finger.

At once, the room fell silent. No hum from the lamp. No rustle from the curtains. Even the tick of the little clock seemed to stop.

Lila looked at her hands.

They were fading. Not disappearing exactly. Just turning see-through, like glass in moonlight.

"Am I invisible?" she whispered.

From her pillow came a tiny sound. Frost, her kitten, who had been napping all day, lifted his head. His ears stood up. He was staring hard, not at Lila, but at the blanket.

Then the wardrobe gave a soft creak.

Lila held the blanket tight against her chest. The glowing star made a tiny warm spot in her hands, as if it knew something she did not. Frost’s tail twitched once.

Lila took a careful breath and tiptoed toward the wardrobe.

Something was hiding behind it.

And now it knew she was there.
