Julka finds a strange silver cloak that can make her vanish. With Philip, she heads to the park, where a soft rustling in the bushes hints at something waiting by the pond.
Julka lived in a yellow house at the end of a quiet street, where the windows caught the afternoon light and the clouds drifted past like slow white boats. She liked making up adventures for her cat and pretending the garden path led to faraway lands.
One afternoon, while she was getting ready to go to the park, Julka noticed something hanging on a chair: a silvery cloak, thin as mist and cool as rainwater. It shimmered when she touched it. She slipped it over her shoulders and looked in the mirror.
"Oh!" she gasped.
Her hands were fading. Then her arms. Then her whole body, until only her nose and the tips of her fingers seemed to be there at all. Julka spun once, then twice, laughing so hard she nearly forgot to breathe. "I'm invisible!" she whispered.
She hurried to Philip's house, nearly bursting with excitement. Philip loved curious things, especially anything that felt like a puzzle. When Julka showed him the cloak, his eyes grew huge.
"We have to try it at the park," he said at once.
So off they went, Julka nearly disappearing with every step and Philip trying not to grin too loudly. The park was full of chirping sparrows and scampering squirrels, and the pond lay still and shiny under the trees. Julka tiptoed between the bushes, thrilled by every rustle of leaves.
Then they heard it again.
A soft, strange rustling came from the thick bushes beside the pond. The branches shivered. Something was moving there, as if it had been waiting for Julka to come close...
