The Ladder in the Attic

Przemek and Lena uncover a hidden ladder in their grandfather’s attic and climb into a strange world hidden above the clouds.

Przemek loved the attic in his grandfather’s old house. It smelled of dust, wood, and forgotten things, and every box seemed to hide a secret. Lena followed him everywhere, never once pretending to be brave when she was actually curious.

"Do you think there’s anything worth finding up here?" she whispered, peering between two towers of books.

"There has to be," Przemek said, nudging aside a crate full of curled maps and bent paper airplanes.

Something pale and narrow caught his eye. At first he thought it was just another broken plank. Then the boxes shifted, and he saw rungs disappearing into the ceiling.

Lena’s mouth dropped open. "That was not there a second ago."

Przemek reached up, gripped the lowest rung, and pulled. The wood gave a soft groan. A square panel slid aside overhead, and cold air spilled down from the darkness above.

There was a ladder. Not a short one, or a loose one, but a long, old ladder bolted into the hidden gap in the roof, climbing straight into a black tunnel no one had ever mentioned.

For a moment neither of them moved.

Then Lena squeezed past him first.

The climb went on and on, higher than Przemek had expected, higher than the attic should have allowed. The air grew thinner and brighter. When at last Przemek pushed himself through the opening, he forgot how to breathe.

There was no roof above the house anymore.

There were clouds.

Soft white hills stretched in every direction, glowing in the pale light. Narrow bridges of mist linked strange round towers. Floating islands drifted slowly past one another like sleepy ships. Somewhere nearby, something large beat its wings with a sound like distant thunder.

Lena clutched Przemek’s hand so hard it hurt.

Beyond the nearest cloud bank, a tall figure in a shining cloak appeared, walking toward them as if the sky itself had opened to let it through.
