Guardians of the Star Trees

Susie and Michael slip into the forbidden forest at night and discover glowing trees, a strange voice, and a cloaked figure who says they have arrived just in time.

Susie and Michael had spent years listening to stories about the forest behind their house. In the village, people said the trees kept their own secrets, and that after dark the paths belonged to the animals alone. Most children treated that as a warning. Susie and Michael treated it like an invitation.

So when their parents left for a long meeting with the neighbours one warm June evening, the two siblings finally did what they had been dreaming about for ages. They pulled on jackets over their pyjamas, grabbed two torches, and slipped quietly out of the house before anyone could stop them.

At first, the forest seemed only dark and ordinary. The last gold of sunset hung between the trunks, and the leaves whispered overhead as if they were sharing a joke. Crickets sang from the grass. Twigs snapped under their shoes. Every step felt braver than the last, and every shadow looked a little more alive.

Then Susie stopped so suddenly that Michael nearly walked into her.

“Look,” she breathed.

Ahead of them stood a tree unlike any they had ever seen. Its bark shimmered silver in the fading light, and tiny points glowed along its branches like stars trapped in wood. Michael lifted his torch, but the beam seemed to vanish before it touched the tree. The little lights only grew brighter, pulsing softly, as if the tree had noticed them.

“Can you see it?” Susie whispered.

Michael nodded, though his throat had gone dry. “It’s real,” he said, as if saying it aloud might make it steadier.

He reached out before Susie could stop him and brushed his fingertips against a branch.

The lights flared.

A cool wind rushed through the clearing, and from somewhere high in the crown of the tree came a voice, quiet and clear, like leaves speaking in the dark.

“Guardians... you have come just in time...”

Susie and Michael spun around.

A figure stepped out from behind the nearest trunk, tall and still, wrapped in a cloak that looked woven from leaves and moonlight. Their face was hidden in shadow, except for a pair of shining eyes that seemed to hold the whole night inside them.

“If you truly want to become guardians of the Star Trees,” the stranger said, “you must pass the test of courage. Time is short. The forest is waiting.”

Before either of them could answer, more lights blinked awake in the darkness all around them. One by one, the trees began to glow, and a narrow path opened between their roots, leading deeper into the woods where the shadows had grown thick and silent.

Susie tightened her grip on her torch.

Michael took one step back, then looked at the glowing path again.

Somewhere ahead, something in the forest was waking up.
