Guardians of the Deep Forest

Three teenagers enter a forest where time bends and ancient magic stirs, only to find a hidden circle beneath the trees and a warning that leaves them no time to turn back.

Night settled over Brzezinowo, and moonlight silvered the narrow path into the Deep Forest. Natalia, Maks, and Igor stood at its edge like they were waiting for the trees to decide whether to let them in. For years, their families had traded stories about strange lights, voices in the dark, and things that vanished without explanation. Tonight, curiosity finally outweighed sense.

The forest swallowed them at once. The trunks rose close and dark, their branches locked together overhead like twisted fingers. Moss muffled every step, and the air felt old, as if no one had breathed it in years. Natalia glanced down at her watch and stopped short. The hands had frozen.

"Mine too," she whispered.

Before anyone could answer, Igor flinched. A voice had brushed past his ear, soft as breath and sharp as ice. It had spoken his name.

"Did you hear that?" he asked.

Maks nodded, but his face had gone pale. Then, ahead of them, something moved between the trees. Not a torch. Not a lamp. An emerald light pulsed once, then twice, spilling through the darkness as if the forest itself had started to glow from within.

They followed it into a clearing no one would have expected to exist. In the centre hovered a circle of stone, ancient and flawless, each slab carved with runes that seemed to shift when Natalia tried to focus on them. The green light burst from its middle, washing over their faces, warm one second and cold the next.

Then the stones trembled.

The ground split with a low, grinding groan, and a spiral staircase appeared where there had been only earth a moment before. It sank into blackness so deep it seemed to pull at the edges of the light around it. Natalia felt the urge to run, but the air around the stairs hummed with the same strange force that had brought them here.

A whisper rose from inside the circle, clearer now, trembling with urgency.

"The guardians have returned. Time is running out. Enter or leave... forever."

The three friends stared at one another, each waiting for someone else to move first. Maks swallowed hard, then placed one foot on the first step.

A crash split the forest behind them.
