Tom discovers a hidden drawer in Grandma Zosia's kitchen and finds a strange object that wakes the house into magic.
Tom always liked the holidays best when he spent them at Grandma Zosia’s small house on the edge of the village. It smelled of warm bread, old wood, and the lemon polish she used on the table every Sunday. The curtains whispered when the wind moved them, and the carpets were so soft under his feet that he often forgot to put his slippers back on.
But the place Tom loved most was the kitchen. That was where everything interesting seemed to live: jars of dried herbs, chipped cups, recipe cards with curled corners, and the tall oak sideboard that stood against the wall like it was guarding a secret.
On a rainy afternoon, while the drops ticked steadily against the window and Grandma Zosia dozed in her favourite armchair, Tom wandered over to the sideboard. He was not looking for trouble. He was only looking for something to do. That was when he noticed it.
Between a stack of faded cloths and a row of old cookbooks, there was a narrow seam in the wood. Tom leaned closer. It was a drawer, but one he had never seen before. He slipped his fingers under the edge and pulled. Nothing moved.
He tried again, harder this time, and felt something catch beneath the cloth. A tiny silver key tumbled into his palm, no bigger than a fingernail. Tom looked at Grandma Zosia. She was still asleep, one hand resting on the arm of her chair.
His pulse thudded in his ears as he found a tiny lock hidden in the sideboard. The key fit so neatly it seemed made for his hand. There was a soft click.
The drawer eased open by itself.
Inside lay a knot of bright threads, a small notebook covered in strange marks, and a glass ball no larger than a plum. Blue sparks drifted inside it, quick as trapped fireflies. Tom barely had time to breathe before he touched it.
A prickling warmth ran through his fingers. The kitchen shivered. The table lifted an inch from the floor. A spoon slid across the counter on its own. Even the cups began to tremble as if they were listening.
Then the notebook gave a dry little whisper from deep inside its pages.
"Find the next key..."
Tom stared at the floating furniture, unable to move. Across the kitchen, the cupboard door creaked open on its own, slowly, as though something inside had just woken up.
