Grandma Krysia's Secret Drawer

Hania finds a strange drawer in Grandma Krysia's kitchen and discovers a tiny enchanted spoon that makes the room come alive.

Hania loved visiting Grandma Krysia. Her kitchen always smelled of warm cake, raspberry tea, and something sweet baking in the oven.

One afternoon, Grandma went out to water the flowers, and Hania stayed at the table with her legs swinging. She looked at the cups, the jars, the shiny kettle. Then she noticed something she had never seen before. A drawer near the sink was open just a crack.

It did not look like the others. Tiny stars and round clouds were drawn along the front, as if someone had painted the sky onto the wood.

Hania stepped closer. The kitchen felt very quiet. She pulled the drawer open slowly.

Inside, on a nest of blue cloth, lay a little silver spoon shaped like a moon.

It gave a soft twitch.

Hania froze. The spoon moved again, just a tiny shiver of light. When she picked it up, the curtain by the window fluttered as if a breeze had slipped through the room. The clock ticked once, then a bright butterfly burst out from behind its face and lifted into the air.

Hania stared at the drawer in her hand.

From deep inside it came a faint rustle, like something small turning over in the dark.
