The Gate Beneath the Old Bridge

Three friends slip under an abandoned bridge and find a hidden passage that leads toward a strange, living world no one in town will name.

It was well past midnight when Lena, Michal, and Charles met on the old bridge over the Milk River. The bridge was built of cracked brick and sealed history, the kind of place adults glanced at and then refused to discuss. Below it, the river muttered against the stones, catching the last weak light from distant lanterns. The town slept, but the night around the bridge felt awake.

Lena, who never liked leaving a mystery alone, ducked beneath the lowest arch and froze. Half-hidden in the shadow of the masonry was something none of them had seen before: a round door set flush into the brick, fitted with brass rings and carved with spirals so fine they looked alive. It was low, but wide enough for a person to pass through. Michal crouched beside it and pressed his fingers to one of the carvings.

The metal was warm.

"That is not normal," Charles whispered. He was the careful one, the one who always noticed when a street was too quiet or a window too dark. Lena did not answer. She had already found the handle. When she pulled, the door gave way without a sound.

Beyond it lay a corridor cut from old stone, descending under the river in a narrow slope washed with a faint turquoise glow. At first they thought it might be an abandoned cellar, but the walls quickly proved otherwise. Strange paintings covered the stone: long-winged animals, trees with silver leaves, and figures draped in robes that seemed woven from light.

The deeper they went, the stronger the blue shimmer became, as if the walls themselves were breathing. Then a sound drifted up from below them, faint and uncertain, like laughter carried through water. Or a cry.

They stopped at the same time and looked at one another. Lena felt the thrill of it tighten in her chest. Charles had gone very still. Michal was staring past them, down the corridor.

The passage ended at a tall gate made of black glass. Something moved behind it.

Lena reached for the surface just as a light burst from the other side, brilliant and shifting, as though someone had been waiting in the dark and had just lifted their hand toward them.
