On an interstellar mission in the Rho-Tau nebula, the crew of the Odyssey encounters a planet that answers back with symbols, energy surges, and a voice none of them can place.
The Odyssey moved through the Rho-Tau nebula like a blade of polished steel, its hull catching faint light from the dying stars around it. On the bridge, Captain Lena Zaręba studied the data in silence while Commander Nikolai Bajda kept the ship steady, Vera Onishchenko watched the systems with a tightening jaw, and astrobiologist Maximilian Cichy leaned toward the sensor feed as if he could force the planet below to reveal itself by staring harder.
They had been sent to map an unknown world no human survey had touched before. No beacon marked its orbit. No transmission had announced its presence. Yet the planet sat there beneath them, dark and immense, wrapped in a shimmer that kept changing shape whenever the ship adjusted course.
Then the comms crackled.
Not static. Pattern.
Maks straightened. "Lena, look at this."
A line of symbols spilled across the main display, bright violet and gold, pulsing in a rhythm too deliberate to be noise. Vera was already at the diagnostics panel, her fingers moving fast.
"It isn't scrambling," she said. "It's responding."
Lena turned from the viewport. "To what?"
Vera glanced up, unsettled. "To us."
The bridge fell quiet except for the low hum of the engines. Readings began to climb in uneven spikes. Atmospheric scans confirmed life-sign signatures below the cloud layer, but the numbers did not settle long enough to become useful. Something on the planet was active, intelligent, and aware of the Odyssey's approach.
"We're crossing into an energy field," Nikolai said, his voice controlled but sharp. "If it closes around us, I can't promise the ship will hold together."
The symbols on the screen rearranged themselves.
Not randomly. Intentionally.
They formed a new sequence, then another, as if whoever was watching from the planet had noticed their hesitation and decided to make the invitation clearer. The air on the bridge seemed to thicken. Even the lights dimmed, then flared.
Lena took one step toward the command console.
The Odyssey lurched.
A luminous haze surged up around the ship, swallowing the stars, the nebula, and the planet below. Alarms erupted. The deck trembled under their feet. Space itself seemed to bend, softening at the edges like something alive and waking.
And then, inside every mind on the bridge, a voice spoke with calm, impossible certainty:
Visitors from a distant world... are you ready for a makeover?
Before anyone could answer, the light outside exploded into violent colour.
