Franz's Grandfather Watch

Maks and Klara find a carved casket in Grandfather Franz's hidden study and uncover a strange watch that opens a door to another world.

Maks never grew tired of Grandfather Franz's house. It stood at the edge of town, all leaning gables, creaking floors, and shadowy corners that seemed to hide secrets of their own. Beyond the windows, the garden had gone wild with mossy stones, twisted branches, and long grass that swayed even when there was no wind.

On a cloudy afternoon, Maks arrived with Klara, his best friend, and together they climbed the narrow stairs to the attic. Grandfather Franz liked to collect unusual things: maps with faded ink, boxes of rusty keys, cracked pens, and books so old their titles had rubbed away. But the place Maks loved most was the hidden study behind the sliding wall in the library.

That day, Franz looked at them with a curious little smile. "If you find the study," he said, "remember that not everything is what it seems."

Klara frowned. "That sounds like a warning."

"Or an invitation," Maks said, already reaching for the secret panel.

The wall gave way with a soft scrape. Inside was a small, dim room that smelled of dust and wood polish. On the desk, waiting as if it had been placed there moments ago, sat a casket carved with dragons winding around the lid.

Klara leaned closer. "Open it."

Maks lifted the lid carefully. Inside lay an old pocket watch on a silver chain. Its face was covered in a strange swirling pattern, like smoke trapped under glass. The moment Maks touched it, a faint tingling ran up his fingers.

The watch gave a single, sharp click.

The study shuddered. The shelves blurred. The floor seemed to tilt away beneath them, and the air around the desk rippled like water. Klara grabbed Maks's sleeve just as the room dissolved into mist.

When the spinning stopped, they were no longer in the study. They stood in soft grass under a sky that shimmered with colours Maks had never seen before. Far away, enormous mushrooms rose from the hills, their caps glowing green and gold. Tiny winged shapes darted through the air above them.

Klara's breath caught. "Maks..."

Something moved behind the nearest hill.

A creature slowly stepped into view, its eyes shining like stars, and began to walk toward them.
