Fern Blossom and the Forest Whisper

Zosia and her older brother Julek slip into an ancient forest on Kupala Night, chasing the legendary Fern Flower. In the mist, the trees begin to whisper back.

June was ending, but Zosia felt summer had only just begun. She lay awake in the dark, listening to the village breathe around her, while beyond the open window the forest stood black and watchful. Then came the faintest rustle, as if someone had whispered her name from the trees.

She slipped from bed, padded to the door, and stepped outside. Julek was already waiting on the veranda, hands in his pockets, trying very hard not to look pleased with himself.

"I knew you’d come," he whispered.

Their grandmother had told them the story every year: on Kupala Night, the Fern Flower bloomed for a heartbeat, somewhere deep in the old forest. Whoever found it might hear things no one else could hear. The tale had always sounded like one of her endless Slavic stories, half warning and half wonder. Tonight, though, Zosia wanted to know if any of it was true.

They crossed the last cottages and entered the trees. The air turned cooler at once. Moss softened their steps, wet needles brushed their sleeves, and the dark trunks closed in around them like silent giants. Far off, an owl called once, then went quiet.

A pale light flickered between the ferns.

Zosia caught Julek’s arm. "Did you see that?"

He nodded, but his voice came out thin. "We should follow it."

The light drifted deeper into the forest, vanishing and appearing again just beyond the next line of trees, always out of reach. Soon the path seemed to change under their feet. Stones with strange marks rose from the grass. The branches leaned lower. Then, all at once, the mist rolled in thick and cold, wrapping itself around them until even the trees looked far away.

From somewhere inside the fog came a whisper.

"So you came at last. If you want the flower, answer the forest first."

Zosia turned slowly. On a moss-covered stone sat a small creature with wings like glass and eyes bright as green fire. It tilted its head and opened its mouth, as if the very next question might decide whether they ever found their way home.
