Three friends find a hidden magical doorway under an old bridge in Aurora, and step into a place where the world bends in ways they cannot explain.
Aurora was the kind of town that looked ordinary until you learned where to stare. The old stone bridge at the edge of Azure Park had been covered in graffiti, scratched with initials, and propped up by piles of carefully balanced stones left there by bored teenagers and curious kids. Cuba, Nina, and Matthew came there whenever they were looking for something no one else had noticed yet.
That evening, the light was fading fast. Mist drifted in thin bands beneath the bridge, softening the cracked bricks and turning the shadows deep and strange. Nina stopped so abruptly that both boys nearly walked into her.
"Look," she whispered.
At first Cuba saw nothing. Then he noticed it too: a pale shimmer tucked into the shadow of one support, just above the ground, as if the air itself had caught on something hidden. Matthew lifted a hand toward the wall. The brick shivered under his fingertips, and silver lines flared across the air in a neat, impossible grid.
Nina let out a sharp breath. "Tell me I'm not the only one seeing that."
Cuba crouched beside her, his skepticism wavering as the lines widened, pulling apart like a seam being unpicked. Where the brick should have been, there was now a narrow doorway filled with swirling mist and tiny sparks that drifted like trapped stars.
The three of them stared at it without speaking. The opening gave off a low, almost audible hum, like a note held too long. Then something inside it seemed to whisper, not quite a word and not quite a name.
"It knows we're here," Nina said, her voice barely steady.
"So what do we do?" Cuba asked, though he already knew none of them had a real answer.
The doorway flickered.
Matthew moved first. Before either of the others could stop him, he stepped into the mist. Nina grabbed for his sleeve, Cuba lunged after them, and the opening snapped wider just long enough to swallow all three of them whole.
Cold fog closed over their faces. Their footing vanished. And then, all at once, the bridge was gone.
They stood on the shore of a black lake so still it reflected nothing at all. Pale lights drifted above the water like watchful eyes. Across the dark surface, a cloaked figure was waiting, turned toward them as if it had been expecting their arrival all along, one hand already lifted in greeting.
