Lena discovers a door that should not exist, and behind it lies an emerald world where magic breathes in the walls and something unseen seems to be waiting for them.
The old study was so still that even the dust seemed to be listening.
Lena stood with her fingers wrapped around a brass handle she was sure had not been there a minute ago. The door was narrow, dark, and set into the paneling as if it had always belonged there, hidden in plain sight. The room around it smelled of old paper and cold ash, but when she leaned closer, a trace of mint reached her too, sharp and impossible.
Behind her, Antek and Zośka had stopped whispering. They were staring at her, waiting. Lena did not like the way her own heartbeat sounded in the silence, but she twisted the handle anyway and pushed.
Light spilled through the crack, green and alive. The three of them froze at the threshold. Beyond the door was not another room in the house, but an emerald chamber glowing as if the walls held moonlight in their stone. Patterns of leaves and vines moved across the surfaces, slow as breathing. The floor shimmered beneath their feet, and somewhere deeper inside came the faint sound of bells, followed by laughter so soft it might have been carried in on a dream.
Antek stepped forward first. "This can't be real," he whispered, though he sounded more excited than scared.
Before Lena could answer, one of the walls shifted with a low, silky scrape and opened into a passage darker than the chamber itself. Zośka crouched beside the threshold and picked up a silver key lying on the floor. It was colder and heavier than it looked, and the moment her fingers closed around it, the door behind them slammed shut.
The chamber dimmed.
Lena spun around. The only light now came from the green glow in the walls, and that light seemed to be retreating, as if something in the room had just noticed them. A shadow moved in the far corner, too smooth to be a draft, too deliberate to be nothing. Lena reached for Zośka's arm and held her breath as the shape lengthened, rose, and slowly took on the outline of a person.
Then it stepped out into the light and looked straight at them.
