Three friends uncover a hidden ruin on Mars and trigger a signal that should not exist.
Martian dust drifted around them in a thin red haze, catching the beam from Sora's suit lamp and turning it into a pale ribbon of light. She steadied her breath and looked at Nicodemus, who was crouched beside a dented metal box half-buried in the sand. A green glow leaked through the seams. Lena stood over the old escape pod behind them, tapping the cracked glass with one impatient glove.
"Whatever's inside, we're opening it," Sora said. Her pulse was already racing. For kids who'd grown up on Redpoint orbital station, setting foot on Mars was rare enough. Finding a ruin out here, far beyond the mapped survey routes, felt impossible. Even stranger was the fact that the station's communications had been glitching for weeks. Static. Missing packets. Voices cutting out mid-sentence. The adults kept calling it a systems problem. The three of them had stopped believing that.
Nicodemus rose slowly, balancing with one hand against the box. "It's got a combination lock. Old model. Still powered, somehow."
Lena frowned. "Or it's waiting for someone stupid enough to touch it."
"Thanks," Sora muttered, though her own voice came out tighter than she wanted.
Nicodemus brushed dust from the panel and started turning the numbers. One click. Two. Three.
The box answered with a jolt.
A harsh metallic tone burst through their helmets, followed by another, then a pause so exact it felt deliberate. Sora's skin prickled. Lena snapped on her communicator and recorded the sequence while the translator scrambled across the screen.
"It isn't matching anything," she whispered. "Not any language in the database. Not even a pattern."
Then the ground shuddered.
A blue light flared beneath the escape pod, so sudden and bright that all three of them stumbled back. The sand at their boots lifted in delicate spirals, as if something below was drawing in the air itself. Lines of light spread outward, sharp and clean, carving a perfect circle around them.
"Sora," Nicodemus said, his voice barely steady. "That wasn't there a second ago."
The circle finished closing. In its center, a hologram rose from the dust: a star map, vast and trembling, with one unknown star pulsing deep in the dark. Sora stared at it, frozen, as her helmet filled with a voice she had never heard before.
You have arrived.
The light pulsed once.
You are finally ready to learn the truth.
