A first camping night without adults turns uneasy when Karolina and her friends hear something impossible moving through the woods.
The campfire burned low, its light shivering across the thin pine trunks and catching on four tense faces gathered around it. Karolina sat with her arms wrapped tight around her knees, staring into the flames as if they could explain why her chest felt so full of both fear and exhilaration. It was their first night camping alone, without parents, without rules, without anyone telling them the dark was only dark.
Hubert was still trying to make them laugh, but even his jokes sounded thinner than usual. Ola kept glancing past the fire into the black between the trees, pretending she wasn’t. Only Bartek looked calm, though Karolina knew him well enough to see the stiffness in his jaw every time a branch cracked overhead.
Then Karolina heard it.
“Did you hear that?” she whispered.
The others fell silent. Deep in the forest, something laughed. Not loudly, not humanly either, but with a strange, clear note that seemed to move from one tree to the next, as if the sound itself were choosing a path.
Hubert forced out a grin. “Great. Haunted woods. Perfect.” But the smile slipped almost at once.
Ola stood up so fast the log behind her scraped the ground. “Maybe someone’s out there,” she said, though her voice wavered. “Maybe they need help.”
Bartek was already reaching for his torch. “Then we find out.”
Karolina hesitated only a second before following them. The firelight thinned behind their backs as they stepped off the clearing and into the cold, resin-scented dark. Their torches cut narrow paths through the trees, revealing wet needles, hanging roots, and the faint impression of footprints in the mud.
Not one trail.
Several.
They curved around the campsite in a slow circle, as if someone had been watching them from the woods for a long time.
Karolina’s mouth went dry. The forest that had seemed exciting an hour ago now felt shut around them, listening. She looked at the others, but no one spoke. No one seemed willing to name what they were all thinking.
Then, from somewhere just beyond the reach of their lights, came a soft dragging whisper.
They moved one step closer.
The torchbeam caught something bright half-buried in the moss, and Karolina stopped breathing.
